The S.M.A.R.T. numbers worth watching

Drive makers label the attributes a little differently, but a handful of counters do the real talking.

  • Reallocated sector count is the number of bad blocks the controller has already swapped out. A stable zero is fine. A number that climbs between two readings means the surface is losing sectors faster than normal.
  • Current pending sector count tracks blocks the drive found suspicious on a read but has not yet marked as bad. A value that drops back to zero after a rewrite is usually harmless. One that stays high, or turns into a reallocated sector on the next pass, is a warning.
  • Offline uncorrectable and reported uncorrectable errors record reads the controller could not fix at all. Any nonzero value here means the drive is hiding damage that will not go away.

Temperature above the rated maximum shortens the life of the motor and the heads faster than anything else on the list. Most consumer drives are rated for 40–55 °C in operation; sustained readings above that cost you months of life.

When to back up and replace the drive

Schedule a full backup and start looking for a replacement when you see any of these:

  • Reallocated sectors that increase between two readings
  • A current pending sector count that stays high, or keeps coming back after a rewrite
  • Any nonzero offline or reported uncorrectable error
  • Temperature above the vendor’s rated maximum under ordinary load
  • Strange sounds: clicking, grinding, or the drive spinning down and back up on its own

These signs usually appear days or weeks before the drive actually fails, which is the window a health check is meant to open.

HDD lifespan, in plain words

A hard drive does not have a single “TBW” number the way an SSD does. Its life is rated by three mechanical limits: power-on hours, load and unload cycles, and the annualised failure rate the manufacturer publishes for the model.

A typical consumer drive is rated for around 50 000 power-on hours and 300 000 load cycles. Keep it cool and it usually outlasts the warranty. Run it hot in a laptop that gets carried around, and the bearings and heads wear out sooner.
